Young people like Lolley need your local love

The University of Toronto’s partnership with United Way has helped to improve the lives of members of our community for over 20 years. Each year, our staff, faculty, students, alumni, and retirees contribute to the giving campaign in support of the United Way of Greater Toronto.

As a long-time advocate for women’s rights, health and empowerment I am thankful for organizations such as Women United who work closely with United Way. In 2018, Women United raised over $1.5 million to support 17 programs that directly address the barriers women face.


These programs include employment and education supports that provide women with focused job-search skills, placements and certifications. The WoodGreen Community Services’ Homeward Bound program, for example, provides supports to single mothers living in shelters to help them achieve economic self-sufficiency. The Elizabeth Fry Toronto’s Next Step to Employment program, meanwhile, provides one-to-one training and job search support to women in conflict with the law, helping them pursue further education and secure employment.

This kind of vital work is made possible by donations we make to United Way. Here are some more general examples of what your contribution can provide, this year:

  • $50 provides a frost prevention kit for two homeless people, including a scarf, toque, gloves and pocket warmers.
  • $100 can provide at-risk kids with the necessary school supplies to start the year off right.
  • $250 provides 75 transit tickets to assist low income clients with mental health issues to travel to/from individual counselling or group support program.
  • $500 can enroll a single mother in a career training course so can she can get a job and support her family.

In thinking of those among us who need support, I hope that you consider donating, to help to make this year’s campaign a success. Our campaign runs until December 31.
