“I am delighted to take on this role and look forward to working together to build a sustainable Defined Benefit pension plan that will be there for generations of university employees to come.”
Gale Rubenstein
The joint sponsors of the new University Pension Plan Ontario (UPP) are pleased to announce the appointment of Gale Rubenstein as the inaugural Chair of the UPP Board of Trustees [PDF].
The UPP Joint Sponsors – made up of Employees (Faculty Associations, United Steel Workers locals and other staff groups) and Employers (University of Toronto, University of Guelph and Queen’s University) – held a comprehensive national search process, led by a candidate selection committee made up of Sponsor representatives.
Gale Rubenstein has decades of experience in corporate restructuring, pensions and regulatory issues and was selected as the provincial facilitator during negotiations on leading public sector jointly sponsored pension plans, including for HOOPP, CAAT, Teachers’ and OPTrust.
Under the UPP’s shared governance structure, the Board of Trustees (consisting of 14 Trustees, including the Chair) will be the administrator of the UPP, responsible for overseeing both plan’s investment and administration.
The Joint Sponsors will each nominate individuals with appropriate expertise to fill the remaining trustee positions on the Board.
The UPP will officially launch on January 1, 2020, with an anticipated conversion date from the previous pension plan to the new UPP of July 1, 2021.
