Toronto Public Health (TPH) is currently investigating a mumps outbreak in the city.

Mumps is circulating in young adults in Toronto. Check your vaccinations (and those of dependants) and make sure you have had two doses of mumps vaccine (MMR or MMRV).

All of the cases related to Toronto school settings acquired the mumps from close contact with a known individual who already had the mumps and not from the school setting. However, broader community spread of the mumps is now occurring in Toronto. Individuals should ensure they are up-to-date with their vaccinations against the mumps.

The mumps virus is found most often in saliva and respiratory droplets. It is spread from person to person through coughing, sneezing, or even talking or coming into contact with a person’s saliva by sharing drinks, food or water bottles, or by kissing.

If you have your vaccination records (yellow card) you can see whether you have had two MMR vaccinations after your first birthday. If you are unsure of your vaccination status contact your health provider. It may be recommended that you receive a second booster.
