March 8 is International Women’s Day

March 5, 2015

Celebrated on March 8th, International Women’s Day (IWD) recognizes and highlights the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. Proclaimed by the United Nations in 1911, IWD connects thousands of women from around the world through rallies, conferences, artistic performances and more.

The University of Toronto is a long standing supporter of IWD, and celebrates this historic day across all three campuses.

In honour of IWD, the Office of Student Life at St. George Campus will be hosting its 2nd annual Women in Leadership: Inspiring Change discussion. This café discussion aims to tackle important questions in regards to various intersections of identity as it relates to women and leadership. The event is open to students, staff and faculty across all three campuses, and will highlight possible involvement opportunities for women in the U of T community.

University of Toronto Scarborough kick started celebrations on February 25 with ‘What Makes a Man Discussion’ by Jeff Pereira from the White Ribbon Campaign, which looked at gender roles in the broader context of how to engage men in talking about issues that women face. The celebration will continue through March 20th, aiming to engage the U of T community in meaningful communication about topics such as the history of feminism, the portrayal of women in the media, and the empowerment of women.

University of Toronto Mississauga is hosting a week-long celebration from March 2 – 6. The UTM Women’s Centre is hosting events such as ‘Celebrating the Lives of First Nations Women’, a Healing Circle, and a Closing Gala which offers dinner and performances with proceeds going to Sisters in Spirit.
