Equity work is so often focused on the present and future: affirming the urgency of change and strategizing how to move forward. Yet now more than ever, it is crucial to acknowledge that the progress, hopes, and goals shared in this 2021 Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Report are indebted to the long history of equity work already established at the University of Toronto.
This work laid the foundation for Institutional equity offices across the tri-campus as well as the University’s first Executive Director, EDI role. It has also enabled us to engage the passion and commitment of students, staff, faculty, and librarians in task forces and working groups that now guide our progress forward.
Recent institutional reports by the Anti-Black Racism Task Force, Antisemitism Working Group, and Steering Committee for the University of Toronto Response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada call upon all of us to see our roles and responsibilities as we work towards our current goal: to summon our community’s creativity, ingenuity, and strength to move this institution from “equity and inclusion” to “belonging.”
In 2021 the University of Toronto planted seeds of change across the institution.
