Re: The 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games: An Update for Faculty & Staff

Please distribute widely.

The Pan Am and Parapan Am Games are coming! Soon the Greater Toronto Area and our University will play host to athletes from 41 countries.

In follow up to the memo issued in July 2014, we are writing with important information with respect to the Games.

Employees Volunteering for the Games; Expectations of Managers

A number of University employees will be volunteering with the Games. Employees who volunteer can use vacation time, banked overtime, or personal days (to the extent that these are available), to cover absences due to volunteering for the Games.

Managers are encouraged to support their employees’ interest in being a part of the Games. We also plan to recognize the efforts of those employees who volunteer as part of the Games.

Alleviating Traffic Congestion during the Games

Games organizers and Toronto Mayor John Tory have made an appeal to employers across the GTA to play a role in alleviating traffic congestion on our highways and streets during the Games. We are all encouraged to use public transportation where possible.

We anticipate that congestion will have a greater impact on the Scarborough Campus due to the number of anticipated visitors and we ask Managers on that campus to facilitate flexible work arrangements where possible. Those who drive to campus should give themselves extra time and consider approaching campus via Kingston Road or using alternate exits from the 401 such as Neilson or Meadowvale Road. Increased public transit to that area may make that a quicker way to get to campus.

When are the Games?

Pan Am Games Friday, July 10 – Sunday, July 26, 2015
Parapan Am Games Friday, August 7 – Saturday, August 15, 2015

What are the U of T venues?

Scarborough Campus

The Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre (known during the Games as the CIBC Pan Am / Parapan Am Aquatics Centre and Field House) will feature diving, fencing, swimming, synchronized swimming, modern pentathlon and sitting volleyball (Parapan Am Games). The new athletics fields adjacent to TPASC, and the new UTSC Tennis Centre (which is at the opposite end of the campus) will host wheelchair tennis.

Please check the Campus Status page for Games-related updates.

At St. George Campus, the Pan Am Parapan Am Fields will host field hockey (PanAm Games), football 5-a-side and 7-a-side (Parapan Am Games), while both PanAm and ParaPan Am archery competitions will be held at Varsity Stadium.
