In 2016, the University initiated a review of the compensation structures for Professional/Managerial and Confidential staff to ensure that senior administrative staff have continued opportunities for career progression, and that subject matter experts and individuals on all three campuses are compensated and evaluated appropriately.

The University engaged an external consulting firm to conduct this review and to make recommendations on an appropriate salary structure and revisions to our existing Job Evaluation Tool (JE Tool) for Professional / Managerial and Confidential jobs.

As a result, at the March meeting of Business Board, an updated compensation framework and adjusted salary ranges were approved.  Changes will allow for a broader distribution of salaries, within a more traditional salary range structure, and will allow the University to better manage an influx of positions and position growth.


What changes are being made?

Effective May 1, 2018 we have updated the job hierarchy and salary range structure for Professional / Managerial staff to include eleven levels (PM 1 – PM11). The job hierarchy for Confidential staff will remain the same (C1 – C3).

As a result, all salary ranges for these employee groups have been adjusted and expanded; the salary ranges for PM 8 – 11 levels will be open.

The updated salary ranges for Professional / Managerial and Confidential staff are now available on the HR & Equity website.


What does this mean for you?

  • As a result of the revisions to the Job Evaluation Tool, Professional / Managerial positions will be administered across PM1-PM11 levels, with some Professional / Managerial positions being adjusted to a different level within the updated framework.
  • As a result of the adjusted salary ranges, only those Professional / Managerial and Confidential employee’s salaries that fall below the minimum of the new salary range will have their salaries adjusted to their new salary range minimum.
  • The University’s salary ranges for Professional / Managerial and Confidential staff are reflective of the market and we are reassured that we are paying our non-union administrative staff equitably and consistently across all three campuses.

Meetings have been held with division heads where there has been impact to individual positions.  Where there has been an impact to an individual position, Divisional HR Offices will send personalized letters to the impacted Professional / Managerial and / or Confidential staff member and their manager by May 22.

If your position has not been impacted, you will not receive a personalized letter.

Any changes to individual classifications and changes to pay will be effective May 1 and will be reflected in the May 2018 pay.
