On Monday, October 20, University of Toronto will launch its third engagement survey of faculty and staff: ‘Speaking Up’. The survey will be open until Friday, November 14.

The aim of the survey is to:

  1. Understand the University’s progress since the previous surveys in 2010 and 2006;
  2. Identify areas where improvement might be needed; and,
  3. Gather information from current faculty and staff to improve their work experience.

Ipsos Reid, a leading Canadian market research firm, has again been retained to administer the survey, which is a joint initiative of the Offices of the Vice-President & Provost and the Vice-President, Human Resources & Equity.

Three important changes are planned for the 2014 survey:

  1. The survey will be distributed in electronic form only. In order to facilitate full participation we will ensure that by survey launch, all employees in the groups being invited to participate in the survey have an official U of T email address to enable them to complete the survey online.
  2. Survey results will be available to each Division’s representative through an online reporting tool developed by Ipsos Reid. This tool will allow us to improve analysis and facilitate planning and dissemination of results at the divisional level.
  3. One new employee group will be included – Postdoctoral Fellows who are employees (i.e. those individuals represented by CUPE Local 3902, Unit 5)

Earlier this year, Division Heads from across the University were asked to appoint a divisional representative. The role of this individual will be to:

  • Access divisional results through an online reporting tool;
  • Manage the dissemination of divisional results; and,
  • Lead the development and implementation of divisional initiatives in response to the survey results.

Divisional representatives will also play a key role in helping us to engage faculty and staff in participating in the survey. Higher response rates will yield more meaningful results and make it more likely that results for your specific division can be reported. While a 52% response rate on the University’s 2010 survey was encouraging relative to other universities, our goal is to increase participation in 2014.
