|University of Toronto, United Steelworkers Local 1998 – Agreement Ratified
We are very pleased to announce that an agreement between the University and United Steelworkers (USW), Local 1998, has been ratified by the members of the local.
USW, Local 1998 represents about four thousand employees of the University. They are a valued and important part of our community, directly serving students, faculty and researchers, ensuring the proper functioning of the University infrastructure and serving a myriad of roles vital to day-to-day operations at U of T.
I am particularly pleased to have reached this settlement given the difficult fiscal situation faced by the Government of Ontario, our single largest funding partner. In that context, USW Local 1998 and the University arrived at an agreement that respects the important work of Local 1998 members and provides a fiscally responsible framework throughout the life of the agreement and beyond.
The agreement includes some compensation increases for USW 1998 members. It also includes a variety of short, medium and long term measures to enhance efficiency and productivity. Some examples include the removal of one personal day over the life of the agreement, a cap on vacation payouts and a measure requiring new employees to accumulate 10 years of service before becoming eligible for retirement benefits.
Another notable element of the agreement is USW Local 1998’s agreement to work with the University and the University of Toronto Faculty Association on pension reform. This will enhance our ability to ensure the long-term stability of the U of T pension plan. Finally, the agreement includes a unique internship pilot program that will help new university and college graduates make the transition from school to the world of work.
Further information about the agreement will be posted next week.
