The University of Toronto Pension Committee’s Terms of Reference provides for one member of the Pension Committee to be appointed on the recommendation of the non-unionized staff group.

The University’s current non-unionized employee representative on the Pension Committee is Nancy Edwards. Her term will expire on June 30, 2013. As a result, Governing Council requires that our non-unionized employees recommend a new representative or recommend the reappointment of Nancy Edwards for a second term. This recommendation is to be made to Governing Council on May 22, 2013. The Pension Committee’s Terms of Reference are available here.

In 2010, when the Pension Committee was formed, the members of the Confidential, PM and RA / SRA Advisory Committees established this process for selecting the non-union staff representative. This week, I invited the members of our Staff Advisory Committees to convene a Selection Committee to assess nominations and applications and to make a recommendation for the non-unionized staff representative to the Pension Committee to Governing Council.

I am writing you now to invite those of you who are interested to submit your nominations or applications for the non-unionized representative on the Pension Committee in accordance with the aforementioned process. The application / nomination form is available here.

The deadline for submission of applications and nominations is Friday, May 3, 2013.

The search committee will assess nominations and applications based on the following criteria:

Demonstrated general financial and/or investment knowledge;
Demonstrated knowledge of matters related to the pension plans and pension matters in general;
An understanding of fiduciary obligations;
Strong communication skills;
Demonstrated ability to read financial statements;
A commitment to the required time. Members are normally appointed for three-year terms; and, the committee will meet a minimum of four times per academic year; and,
Support of colleagues within the administrative staff group.
One must also be a member of the University of Toronto Pension Plan in order to be eligible.
