Re: Appointment of Alex Brat

I am very pleased to announce that we have successfully concluded our search to fill a key vacancy within Labour Relations.

This search has taken many months and much careful planning and deliberation. The successful candidate, Alexander Brat will be joining us as of May 3, 2010. Alex comes to us with a Master’s degree in Industrial Relations from the London School of Economics and seventeen years Labour Relations experience in large, complex, multi-site organizations. For the last twelve Alex has worked at the senior management/strategic level and has extensive successful experience as chief spokesperson in collective bargaining with a wide variety of unions.

Alex will assume the newly created position of Director of Labour Relations Operations. This is a change from the previous organizational structure and is an evolution recognizing the immense scope of Labour Relations at the University, the complex challenges we are facing, and the need to ensure that we have the highest level of professional leadership capacity so critical to success in the future.

Mary Ann McConkey will continue in her role as Director of Labour Relations, and I am, of course, relieved and delighted that the University can continue to rely on Mary Ann’s experience, deep institutional knowledge and creative, strategic negotiating skills as we move forward. With Mary Ann and Alex leading the team in Labour Relations, I am confident that the University of Toronto will continue to be served with excellence in this important function.

Please join me in welcoming Alex Brat to the University of Toronto.
