- Possibility of Strike by Plumbers/Steamfitters, UA 46 Bargaining Unit at the University of Toronto
The United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry, Local 46 which represents approximately 18 full time appointed plumbers, steamfitters and sprinkler fitters, is in a legal strike position as of September 4, 2007. At this time, the Union has agreed to meet with the University and a government appointed
mediator on September 4th for additional discussions. Pending the outcome of Tuesday’s mediation, we will update you on the status of collective bargaining, including the potential for any work disruption. Should the two parties reach an impasse in bargaining, we have requested that the Union provide the University with 48 hours written notice of any intent to strike.
If a strike does occur, there will be legal picketing on public property around the University at the three main campus locations. The University will not permit any picketing inside buildings or on other University private property. We hope that your operations will not be adversely affected by picketing, however, we believe it is appropriate and necessary to advise you at this time to allow you to begin planning in anticipation of possible strike action.
