Anti-Asian Racism Working Group Survey

Equity, diversity and inclusion are fundamental values at the University of Toronto. Building on U of T’s Statement on Equity, Diversity, and Excellence we are committed to advancing equity within our practices and processes. To that end, the University of Toronto has established an Anti-Asian Racism Working Group (AARWG). The AARWG will review practices, processes, policies and resources in place at the University and make recommendations to support the University’s response to anti-Asian racism. As part of its mandate the AARWG is responsible for consulting members of the University community, including students, staff, faculty, instructors and librarians, about how to create an inclusive environment where Asian community members feel safe, welcome and respected.

To engage as many University members as possible, the AARWG invites all members of the community to share experiences, feedback and recommendations with the AARWG. Anti-Asian racism takes on various forms and Asians in Canada have historically experienced discrimination, harassment, violence and hate as a result of their Asian identity. We are interested to understand how the community understands and experiences anti-Asian racism as well as how the University can foster more inclusive and respectful environments for Asian community members. This information will provide key insights and will inform the recommendations that will be submitted to the University’s senior leadership in the winter term. For news and updates regarding the AARWG progress, please review the AARWG website regularly. The survey will remain open until November 21, 2022.

You will be asked for your UTORid credentials to begin the survey, however, your survey responses will not be associated with your name, email or UTORid and your responses will be kept strictly confidential. Data will only be reported in aggregate form for institutional planning purposes. The de-identified survey responses will be password protected and securely stored within the Anti-Racism and Cultural Diversity Office and only made available to the AARWG Co-Chairs and designated support staff for the AARWG for the purposes of reporting. This survey is not a means for registering a complaint about anti-Asian racism. Complaints should be directed to the Anti-Racism and Cultural Diversity Office and/or an HR representative.

Privacy

This survey is conducted by the University of Toronto Anti-Asian Racism Working Group and is governed by Ontario’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA). It is designed to collect only the minimum amount of personal information necessary for the AARWG’s work. The raw data we collect will be de-identified at the point of collection. Only the AARWG Co-Chairs and the project administrators will have access to the raw data collected. Data that are included in any report issued by the AARWG will be in aggregate form and de-identified or anonymized. All data collected will be stored, encrypted, protected, and later destroyed in accordance with FIPPA and appropriate technical standards.

You are under no obligation to take part in this survey. Your participation is very much welcomed but completely voluntary. Please email anti.asian.racism@utoronto.ca with any questions or concerns.
