What are staff wellness days?
To support staff wellness and personal well-being, the President is granting all appointed staff and librarians with three additional paid days off work. We are calling these days staff wellness days.
What can staff wellness days be used for?
Staff wellness days can be used for any reason; individuals do not need to disclose their reason for scheduling any of these three wellness days.
When can staff wellness days be used?
Staff wellness days can be used individually, or taken as a block, between November 20, 2020 and August 31, 2021.
To request a staff wellness day(s), staff must obtain approval from their manager in accordance with local processes in each department or office (similar to the approval processes used for vacation or personal days).
Depending on operational feasibility and managerial approval, staff wellness days can be used to extend the December holiday break and / or used before or after a statutory holiday.
Staff wellness days cannot be banked, carried over and/or paid out.
Who is eligible to use staff wellness days?
All appointed staff and librarians will be granted three wellness days. This includes unionized and non-unionized appointed staff working in all areas of the university (e.g. administrative staff, caretaking staff, etc.).
Divisions & Faculties may identify those casual employees who have been working consistently at full time hours since the beginning of the pandemic, doing similar work to appointed staff, and who would benefit from wellness days. These individuals’ eligibility for wellness days would be considered with input from HR & Equity on a case-by-case basis.
Why is U of T providing staff wellness days?
The COVID-19 pandemic has been a very stressful time for our entire community. Our staff have worked extremely hard and are committed to supporting our students, faculty, and librarians in this unprecedented academic year. Granting three paid staff wellness days demonstrates our gratitude to our staff for their incredible efforts and resilience during 2020 and provides them with time to either rest or focus on activities that enhance their own or their family’s wellness.
How will staff wellness days be recorded?
Units that use ESS / MSS for leave requests can now request and approve staff wellness days units using this service. For all other units, approved staff wellness days should be recorded directly in HRIS according to local processes.
Information on how to record staff wellness days in HRIS was distributed to business officers and Divisional HR Offices on November 26, 2020 and is posted in HR Memo #2020-96.
Will faculty be provided with wellness days?
No. The University of Toronto is moving the start of the winter term classes in first-entry undergraduate programs and many graduate and professional programs to January 11 to provide faculty and students with much needed time to rest and prepare for the next term before classes resume.
Will the change to the start of some classes, or the introduction of staff wellness days, impact the contracts of employees who have an appointment in a course?
No. The shift to the start of some winter term classes in first-entry undergraduate divisions and the University’s implementation of wellness days for appointed staff will not impact contracts of CUPE 3902 Unit 1 or 3 employees who have an appointment in a course. Courses with a delayed start date may benefit employees as a result of greater flexibility for additional preparation time at the start of the course.
